Michelin has named its first ever list of Key Hotels in the United States, recognizing the 'most outstanding hotels in the country.'

The list of 124 hotels have been awarded one, two or three Keys in a system that's similar to how the Michelin Guide gives out the same ratings to restaurants.

Each hotel that's made it onto the coveted list has been assessed against five criteria by the selection team: excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting.

One Key is meant to signify a 'very special stay,' Two Keys denotes 'an exceptional stay,' and Three Keys, the highest status, marks the hotel's experience as 'an extraordinary stay.'

For the U.S. list, the Michelin Guide noted that hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington, D.C., were 'eligible for the distinction.'

It saw 11 hotels awarded Three Keys, 33 were given Two Keys and 80 establishments were rated as One Key.

It should come as no surprise that seven hotels in California and four hotels in New York made it onto the list of Three Keys category.

On the West Coast, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Big Sur's Post Ranch Inn, Healdsburg's SingleThread Inn, Hotel Bel-Air, Rutherford's Auberge du Soleil, St. Helena's Meadowood Napa Valley and Canyon Ranch Woodside were entries on the list.

The selection team said: 'Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it's no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America.

'Here, we'll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur (Post Ranch Inn and Ventana), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona.

'What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.'

Meanwhile on the East Coast, the team named New York's The Aman, Casa Cipriani, Crosby Street Hotel and The Whitby Hotel on the distinguished list.

They told people to expect 'the highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District.'

'The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life,' the team said.

'Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp.'

The Two Keys category is where you see entries from other states and districts, like Washington, D.C., Florida and Illinois.

Two hotels in the capital earned the rating: Rosewood Washington, D.C., and The Jefferson.

Popular holiday destination Miami Beach had four entries with Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, Faena Hotel Miami Beach, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, and The Setai Miami Beach.

Pendry Chicago, The Langham and The Peninsula were the three establishments representing the Windy City.

Again California was heavily feature in this category with hotels in Carmel Valley (Bernardus Lodge & Spa), Napa (Milliken Creek Inn & Spa), San Francisco (Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero and The Battery), and Sausalito (Cavallo Point Lodge).
